One of the unique features of whoistesting is the approval system to gain a listing and the requirement to update regularly in order to maintain a place on the site.
When we redesigned the site earlier this year we decided to make the updates subject to the same approval as the initial request for a listing. This means we really do expect to see progress in the work put forward for an update.
A situation can arise where an initial application is successful but that the update is rejected. In this case we will maintain the current listing until it expires. This will happen nine months from being first approved.

Anecdotal evidence suggests this is the hardest thing for a a freelance creative to come by. It is also one of the most difficult subjects to raise when dealing with clients (yet often the sole topic of conversation amongst peers).
Be realistic on how much money you need before you can consider this a career. As a guide, in 2009 the median UK full time wage was £25.123* (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8151355.stm). As you are self employed, aka freelance, you will probably need to have a turnover well in excess of that to achieve an equivalent income.
We will return to this subject in later posts.
*Feel free to use any similar statistic, such as salary required to gain your first mortgage etc.

Interviewing models for a shoot, catwalk show or other job. Likely to involve a few quick shots (polaroid or digital) or even a quick video and a lot of hanging around. Expect to be shortlisted via your agency to match a certain look .
Open Casting is without the requirement to be shortlisted first. Can involve a large number of models so even more waiting around.
Go-Sees are similar to a casting but without a specific shoot in mind (See Jurgen Teller’s book “Go-Sees). May be for a magazine, commercial client or photographer. Turn up, have a quick photo or even video taken. Leave hoping they will remember you for some future project.

How an image or shoot may be displayed. This has the potential to be the largest variable within the shoot fee for the photographer, and the model if agency represented. Can be specified in terms of duration, geographic limits and type of use. Any use outside the initial agreement will attract additional fees.
Restricting usage can be a method of keeping within a tight budget.

The legal right to control an image (or other creative work). In the case of a shoot this automatically belongs to the photographer and it is up to them how to assign a license to allow the client and other team members to use the images.
The client or subject of a photograph does not normally have a claim to the copyright of the photos even if they paid the photographer. Copyright is not normally sold or transferred, it remains the property of the photographer.
Although the photographer will usually be the sole copyright holder in the case of fashion & beauty work they in turn may be restricted in the way they can use the images. This may be due to having agreed to model agency booking terms and client’s trademarks appearing within the images.
