Some statistics from whoistesting
With whoistesting listings subject to approval there is obviously a mix of success and rejection involved. While we don’t give individual feedback on the reasons it might be interesting to take a look at some stats about how many people gain listings.

Are you making progress?
One of the unique features of whoistesting is the approval system to gain a listing and the requirement to update regularly in order to maintain a place on the site.
When we redesigned the site earlier this year we decided to make the updates subject to the same approval as the initial request for a listing. This means we really do expect to see progress in the work put forward for an update.

Money - part 1
Anecdotal evidence suggests this is the hardest thing for a a freelance creative to come by. It is also one of the most difficult subjects to raise when dealing with clients (yet often the sole topic of conversation amongst peers).
Be realistic on how much money you need before you can consider this a career. As a guide, in 2009 the median UK full time wage was £25.123*...

Castings and Go-Sees
Interviewing models for a shoot, catwalk show or other job. Likely to involve a few quick shots (polaroid or digital) or even a quick video and a lot of hanging around. Expect to be shortlisted via your agency to match a certain look .
Open Casting is without the requirement to be shortlisted first. Can involve a large number of models so even more waiting around.
Go-Sees are similar to a...

Usage
How an image or shoot may be displayed. This has the potential to be the largest variable within the shoot fee for the photographer, and the model if agency represented. Can be specified in terms of duration, geographic limits and type of use. Any use outside the initial agreement will attract additional fees.
Restricting usage can be a method of keeping within a tight budget.

Copyright
The legal right to control an image (or other creative work). In the case of a shoot this automatically belongs to the photographer and it is up to them how to assign a license to allow the client and other team members to use the images.

Portfolio
The collection of images that gets you work. The printed version is often referred to as your book.
There are standard sizes: 11x14 or 10x12 (inches). Although A4 (297mm x 210mm) and 10x8 are common print sizes they are not normally used for portfolios (although some model agencies have started using 10x8 minibooks). A3 is too big.
Zipped ringbinders, as loved by art students, should be...

Terminology - the start of an ongoing glossary.
Teaching granny to suck eggs? Perhaps, but checking out a number of seemingly related websites it becomes clear that a number of terms have become blurred. If you plan to move off the various forums into the real world we have a few examples which are prone to misunderstanding.
Do be aware that these may not be legally specified definitions. However as copyright and contract law may be...

What we have learnt from running whoistesting.com
As a new version of the website nears completion this seems like a good time to summarise what we have learnt over the last 9 or so years.
Firstly, we’ve been amazed at the response for the site. We have received several thousand applications, and prior to our most recent update, listed about 250 people. Some choose to remove their listing after a while but many have remained active since the...

Invites have gone out
Continued progress towards the new site. Invites have gone out to all those with a current listing inviting them to apply for the new site.
If all goes smoothly we will replace the current version at the end of this week. Inevitably this will result in a drop in the number of people listed as not everyone will migrate immediately. So this might be a good time for a concerted bit of networking.

About the update
One of the things we have changed is that we no longer update existing listings on the site. Instead each time you would like to change your work or information you would re-apply with those details.
This has been driven by three factors:
It ensures progression - that the work submitted represents an improvement on what went before.
That contact details are always up to date.
It massively...

http://whoistesting.com update plans
So we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to update whoistesting - we are at a stage where, although quite close to launch we can not maintain the existing site as well.
We are suspending new applications to the site until the end of the month. If you have recently applied your request will still be considered. Those with existing listings can update them as normal.
As for what is new,...

Make Up Advice
What to put in your portfolio
Most of the people you will show your book to are probably photographers so it is extremely important that the quality of the pictures is very high. Photographers tend to first look at the picture (and try to analyze how it’s shot) and then at the make-up and styling.
Photographers are generally looking for a portfolio where the subjects look like...
